Safety dictates that when you’re leading a young rider, you should not discipline your horse or pony. Never use a pony in training as a beginner’s school mount. Ground manners should be well established first. You should have the same ground manner expectations no matter the size of the horse. While you may be able to muscle a small pony, it is much better to trust that he will respect your space and follow your subtle cues. You and your pony should be partners, working together so you can focus on the child.
